The Skagen painters
Skagen has long been known for the Skagen Painters and their impressive works, which were created with inspiration from the unique nature and light found in Skagen.
Many years ago, it became a tradition for artists to travel to Skagen to experience the breathtaking nature and remote community. Back then, it was not easy to get to Skagen. It was the end of the 19th century and there were no railway tracks from Frederikshavn to Skagen. There was no harbour either, so when ships had to dock, it was on the west coast with terrifying waves that made it difficult. The journey to Skagen was therefore mostly made on horseback.
Artists gathered en masse in Skagen and formed an entire artist colony that included not only artists and painters, but also writers, poets, musicians, etc.
They found a very special inspiration in Skagen that they felt could not be found anywhere else.
